Project Overview:

Umbrage Squared is a single from LA based musician and community figurehead Loss Combinator, released with the underground UK-based recording label The Games We Play. The artist reached out with a vision inspired by brutalist movement architecure and futuristic environment design associated with the musical subculture surrounding wave and neo-grime. The project included both the cover artwork as well as a short promotional clip for social media needs.

Challenges:

• Carefully studying a major architectural movement and creating related original 3d assets

• Open communication regarding the artist and recording label’s individual stylistic needs and clever implementation of provided branding materials

• Utilizing environmental effects and details to drive the correct narrative for the song

Design Process:

The process began with a deep dive into the types of forms and geometric shapes found within brutalist style buildings. Not only was it important to reference the buildings themselves, but also the camera techniques and scene composition used when photographing this type of architecture. These concepts were then taken into consideration within the 3d software to model out the scene and set up the final renders.
