00 C-ZER - I NEED (HYPERTRANCE 2)

hypertrance 2 is the second volume of the audiovisual experience created by the musical genre’s online community. The visual experience was curated and put together by artist and musician nuphory to compliment the release of the 21 track compilation album, and seeks to match the music with the intended visual identity and brand associated with the movement.
I was personally given the opportunity to create the visualizer for the artist C-ZER’s track titled “I NEED”, and was able to work with the musician directly to put something together that matched their vision and spirit of the song.

First it was important to figure out how to actually make the composition progress alongside the track given the abstract nature of the piece, so a minimalistic storyboard was used to give a sense of direction.

This was followed by creating each individual element, including the interface overlays, abstract 3d meshes and textures, and the animated backdrop fractal designs.

Everything was then put together and assembled, with several additions within After Effects.

Final post processing was done by nuphory to intentionally degrade the footage through a crt monitor for a more authentic early 2000s feel and texture, prior to upload.

What is hypertrance?
- very open BPM range (135-180)
- high energy in the drops
- big 4x4 trance drums
- tight mixing
- strong emphasis on emotional impact (chord progs, "epic" sounds)
- grand storytelling in the tracks
- emotional, quieter (maybe piano driven) breakdowns
- heavy emphasis on using authentic feeling sounds
- capturing the optimstic futurism of y2k

Challenges:
- Utilizing multiple digital mediums to craft a full-length reactive audio visualizer
- Working with a team of ~40 artists and designers under a tightly curated brand and vision
- Practicing reliable communication and time management alongside the album’s promo and release schedules
